British-Egyptian pro-democracy activist Alaa Abdelfatah on Tuesday ended a hunger strike that began in April to pressure authorities to release him, family sources said.
“We have just received a letter: it says that your hunger strike has ended. I don’t know what’s going on there. [da prisão]but our family visit is scheduled for Thursday and [Alaa] He asked us to bring him a cake to celebrate his birthday,” announced the activist’s sister, Sanaa Seif, in a message posted on the social network Twitter.

The announcement made this Tuesday, from the Egyptian prison where Alaa Abdelfatah has been held for three years, comes a day after the activist announced that he had put an end to the thirst strike, which began when the COP27 climate summit began on 6 November, in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
His case gained support among climate conference participants, with several officials calling on the Egyptian authorities to release him.
The prison authorities began a medical intervention on the hunger striker last Thursday, after the strike intensified by not also drinking water.
