Air raid sirens sound again in Ukraine

Air-raid warning sirens sounded across all regions of Ukraine on Wednesday morning at the request of the air force, a day after multiple Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Following the request, Ukraine’s 20 or so regions went on alert shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time (08:00 a.m. in Lisbon), according to the French news agency AFP.

Ukraine was hit by around 100 Russian missiles on Tuesday, the biggest strike since early October.

The attack followed the recapture of part of the Kherson region last week, following a Ukrainian counter-offensive launched after kyiv received weapons from its European allies.

Kherson is one of four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia since it invaded the neighboring country on February 24 this year, along with Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Lugansk.

Russia had already annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

Ukraine and the international community in general do not recognize Russian sovereignty in the annexed territories.

The Russian attacks on Tuesday have left energy supplies in a critical situation, the Ukrainian presidency said.

Today there are also warnings of new emergency power cuts in Ukraine, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

Ukrainian power operator Ukrenergo said cold weather was further complicating the situation and the repair of affected infrastructure, urging the population to prepare for further restrictions.

Ukrenergo advised Ukrainians to charge batteries and devices whenever possible so they can keep in touch with their relatives.

He asked, however, that they save on consumption to preserve the “stability of the energy system”, after what kyiv considers coordinated attacks against the country’s critical infrastructure.
