“We are going to talk to the UN Secretary General and ask him to take COP30 to the Amazon,” said Lula da Silva, in an act organized in a space dedicated to the regional governments of the Brazilian Amazon in Sharm el-Sheikh, in Egypt, where COP27.
“If the Amazon has the meaning that it has for planet Earth, if it has the importance that all of you say it has, that all the scientists say it has, we do not have to measure efforts to affirm that a standing tree is worth more than a tree. felled,” he added.
The progressive leader will take office on January 1, 2023 and is making his first trip abroad since his election at the end of October to participate in COP27, which ends on Friday.
Brazil had already been proposed to host COP25, in 2019, but the election of the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, made the country give up hosting the forum that year.
