Luigi Mangione, accused of having killed an American boss, disputes the death penalty requested against him

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers challenged the request of the Minister of Justice to demand the death penalty against the young man this Friday, April 11.

Luigi Mangione, accused of having killed Brian Thompson, a private health insurance chief, to take revenge on this sector, challenged the Trump administration on Friday, April 11 to condemn him to the death penalty.

The United States Minister of Justice, Pam Bondi, publicly asked federal prosecutors in charge of the last week to require the death penalty against the young man, accusing him of having perpetrated “an act of political violence” that “shocked the United States.”

Luigi Mangione, who became a hero for his imprisonment in some people who criticize the US health system, responded on Friday in a judicial document, asking the US justice to oppose this request.

“The state of the United States intends to kill Luigi Mangione to be a political blow,” he denounces his lawyers.

By making public his request for the death penalty, the Minister of Justice reduced the right of the accused to fair legal procedures, they write.

This election, announced by a press release, constitutes a “political, arbitrary and capricious decision, a violation of the protocol against the death penalty, and brings an unalterable prejudice to this procedure”, said Luigi Mangione’s lawyers.

The death penalty still legal at the federal level

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested on December 9. He is accused of having killed the general director of Unitedhealthcare, the country’s main private health insurance, Brian Thompson, five days before when shooting several balls in the street in New York.

If the state of New York has abolished the death penalty, this is not the case of the federal state, which has executed 16 people for fifty years, mainly during Donald Trump’s first mandate.
