‘Big Loser’ Trump attacks potential rivals in 2024

In the countdown to Tuesday’s predictable announcement of his 2024 White House candidacy, and in the aftermath of election night that failed to bring the Republican wave he had hoped for, former US President Donald Trump went on the offensive. The target is not President Joe Biden or the Democrats — who need to keep control of the Senate and lose the House of Representatives a bit — but the eventual opponents of the Republican nomination.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who comfortably won re-election and was declared the Republicans’ big winner on election night, was the first recipient of Trump’s attacks. But the “big loser,” as several North American media outlets dubbed the former president after the candidates he supported failed to meet expectations, didn’t stop there. Yesterday the target was Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, an up-and-coming businessman in the party.

While on the campaign trail, DeSantis was dubbed “DeSanctimonious” by Trump, a pun between his nickname and the word “sanctimoniouswhich means hypocritical. The former president claims it was his support that drove him to win Florida in 2018, saying Thursday night he’s nothing special in his position — he’s an “average governor.” This is after several conservative media outlets praised DeSantis – the New York Post, once a Trump favorite, said he was the future. The former president has also threatened to reveal any damaging information he will have about him.

Youngkin was targeted yesterday and Trump also couldn’t resist playing with the nickname of the governor of Virginia – who didn’t vote in this election. “Young Kin (That’s an interesting approach. Sounds Chinese, doesn’t it?) in Virginia couldn’t have won without me,” the former president wrote on his social network Truth Social. [nome pelo qual são conhecidos os seus apoiantes, das iniciais de Make America Great Again, tornar a América grande de novo] vote for him – otherwise he wouldn’t have come close to winning,” he added, saying he knows this and is under pressure from the Democrats.

It’s unclear why he now decided to attack Youngkin, with Politico of The Hill suggesting it was after his number two, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, The Washington Post that “a true leader realizes when he has become a liability” and that he could not support a third Trump bid for the White House. There were people who read this statement as support for the governor. Youngkin has been touted as a “rising star” in the party and his name has been talked about all year as a possible candidate for 2024. The fact that he was targeted by Trump could serve to draw more attention to himself.

Who will be Trump’s next target? It could be Mike Pence, who will release his memoir as vice president, in which he would blame the ex-president for the invasion of the Capitol. So help me God (God help me) will be released Tuesday, the same day Trump scheduled a “big announcement” at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida club. Today, however, the former president has to forget about the race to the White House or the midterms for a while – the votes are still being counted and in the House of Representatives, Republicans have elected 211 (they are seven of the majority) and Democrats have 194, with Open 30 races. Tiffany, the youngest daughter, is getting married.
