A moment of great consequences. In Rotterdam, a child damaged a Rothko table of a value of up to 50 million euros for a “lack of attention” at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the times reported on Sunday, April 27.
This is the famous abstract work Gray, orange in garnet, No. 8Created by modern artist Mark Rothko in 1960, who was scratched by the child.
“Rothko’s work has suffered damage: several visible scratches in the non -adorned pictorial layer. They were caused by a child who scratched the lower part of the work at a time of lack of attention,” said the museum.
Repair costs generally sent to visitors
According to The British Daily, the child has escaped the attention of the gallery staff and has caused the damage, which has not yet been completely evaluated.
“We are currently studying, in collaboration with experts, the next stages of treatment. We hope that the work can be exhibited again later,” added the museum.
One question is now: how much will the restoration of work cost? And who will finance it? At the moment, the museum has not wanted to communicate the bill. If degradation occurs within a museum, costs are generally sent to visitors responsible for damage.
The damaged table in question was bought by the museum in 1970, the same year as the artist’s death. It was one of his great abstract paintings from Rothko. In 2022, the Dutch art collector Bert Kreuk estimated that the table could reach between 40 and 50 million euros.
