Amnesty International denounces “A live genocide” in Gaza

The report cites “homicides”, “serious attacks against the physical or mental integrity of civilians”, or even “forced displacements and disappearances” committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

“The world is witnessing its screens in a live genocide” committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, denounces the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamar, in preface to the annual report of the Human Rights Organization in the world published this Tuesday, April 29.

“Since October 7, 2023, the date on which Hamas has committed terrible crimes against the citizens of Israel and has taken more than 250 people hostage, the world is witnessing its screens in live genocide.

The states considered, as if they were helpless, Israel killing thousands of Palestinians and Palestinians, massacring entire families for several generations and destroying homes, livelihoods, hospitals and schools, “he writes.

In the section of the report dedicated to the Middle East region, the amnesty reiterates its accusations of “genocide”, already formulated at the end of 2024 and categorically rejected by the Israeli authorities.

“Serious damage to physical or mental integrity”

“Amnesty International’s research has shown that Israel had perpetrated acts prohibited by the Convention on Genocide, with the specific intention of destroying the Palestinian population of Gaza, thus committing a genocide,” writes the organization.

The report quotes in particular the “homicides”, “serious attacks against the physical or mental integrity of civilians”, “forced displacements and disappearances”, the “deliberate imposition of living conditions aimed at leading to the physical destruction of these people.”

The War in Gaza was launched by the unprecedented attacks in Israel of Hamas Palestinos on October 7, 2023, causing the death of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, essentially civil, according to an AFP count based on the official Israeli figures.

Hamas also eliminated 251 people that day, 58 of which are still retained in Gaza and 34 died, according to the Israeli army.

The reprisals of Israel, who have sworn to annihilate the Palestinian Islamist movement, since then have killed at least 52,243 people in Gaza, again mainly civilians, according to figures of the Ministry of Health of the territory, considered reliable by the UN.

The amnesty report also notes that almost 1.9 million Palestinians, or 90% of the population of Gazan, have been transferred since the beginning of the war, and accuses Israel of having “deliberately caused an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.”

Israel controls all international aid flows, vital for the 2.4 million Palestinians of the Gaza Strip, and completely interrupted on March 2, a few days before the collapse of a high fragile fire after 15 months of incessant fights.

CIJ orders measures against Israel

In its report, the amnesty punishes the attitude of the international community, which “has not taken measures worthy of the name to end the atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza.”

“Great powers, including the United States and many countries in Western Europe, have publicly supported the acts of Israel, thus undermining the universal value of international law,” said the report, recalling the measures taken by international justice institutions.

The International Court of Justice ordered provisional measures against Israel, of which the latter “ignores”, underlines the amnesty, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) delivered in 2024 arrest mandates against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The ICC also issued an arrest warrant against Hamas Mohammed Deif’s military leader, canceled after the recent formalization of the latter’s death in an Israeli strike in July 2024.

“Gaza is a proof for international justice and a test for our humanity,” said Heba Morayef, responsible for the amnesty of the Middle East region in North Africa, during a press conference on Monday, pointing out the extreme level of suffering “lasting daily for the Palestinians of Gaza.
