Time is not for calm between Copenhagen and Washington. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced on Wednesday, May 7 that he was going to summon the United States ambassador to Denmark after the Wall Street Journal said Washington was going to strengthen the espionage of Greenland, coveted by Donald Trump.
This article “cares a lot, because we are not spying on friends,” said Warsaw Minister, where a meeting of foreigners of foreigners from the Member States of the European Union took place.
“This is very serious, so we will summon the ambassador for an interview with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he added.
“With hope, of course, that it can be refuted and, in any case, to know very clearly what the position of Denmark is on this subject,” said Danish minister.
In Greenland, a majority against an annexation
According to the WSJ, intelligence agencies have received as instructions to learn more about the independence movement of Greenland and its positions regarding the exploitation of resources by Americans on this immense island.
Intelligence agencies were invited to identify people in Greenland and Denmark that support the US objectives on this Danish autonomous territory, adds the US newspaper.
Tensions are strong between Washington and Copenhagen since Donald Trump repeatedly warned that he wanted to take control of Greenland, invoke security reasons and refuse to exclude the use of force to take it.
Greenland, supported by the Danish government, responded several times that he was not on sale. According to a recent survey, the vast majority of its 57,000 inhabitants want their independence and do not want an annexation from the United States.
