“The court imposes life imprisonment” on the Russians Igor Guirkin and Sergei Doubinsky and the Ukrainian Leonid Khartchenko.
The judges ruled that Igor Girkinen, Sergei Dubinsky and Leonid Kharchenko could be held responsible for transporting the missile BUK from a military base in Russia and their deployment to the launch site, although they did not pull the trigger themselves.
Zelensky hails ‘important decision’
Against a backdrop of rising tensions over the Russian invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the court’s “important decision” on Thursday.
“Punishment for all Russian atrocities, both yesterday and today, will be inevitable,” he added.
Flight MH17 was traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, and broke up over the Donetsk region in the Donbass occupied by pro-Russian separatists. None of the 298 passengers had survived.
