The Berlin zoo had to close its doors to visitors on Friday after one of its animals tested positive for bird flu, reports the US news agency Associated Press.
It was during a routine check on an African grayling, a medium-sized bird, which died last week that trainers discovered it was positive for bird flu. The zoo remains closed for the time being as a preventative measure, particularly while keepers quarantine and separate the different bird species.
“The main goal is to prevent the spread of bird flu,” Berlin’s environment department said.
The Berlin Zoo is far from isolated. Thus, for several weeks, several zoos in Germany, such as those in Karlsruhe and Heidelberg, have been reporting cases of bird flu.
