“A considerable advance”: the medical use of authorized hallucinogenic fungi in New Zealand

In New Zealand, the medical use of hallucinogenic fungi has been authorized, more specifically in its active ingredient, psilocybin.

New Zealand announced on Wednesday, June 18, after having given green light to the medical use of psilocybin, a naturally present compound in certain hallucinogenic fungi, hoping to combat depression.

“Psilocybin remains an unprepared medication, but a very experienced psychiatrist has been authorized to prescribe it to patients with depression who resists treatment,” said David Seymour David Seymour in a statement.

“It is a considerable advance for people with depression who have tried everything and are still suffering,” he said.

Depression treatment?

In addition to this specialist, only psychiatrists who have been involved in clinical trials on psilocybin can in turn prescribe this substance to their patients, according to a very strict protocol, it was specified.

Scientists are increasingly looking at the use of psychedelics to treat various pathologies, such as depression.

In 2023, Australia had already authorized medical purposes for hallucinogenic fungi, but also ecstasy to combat certain mental pathologies.
