In terms of mountain rescue, Saint-Bernard now has competition. In Switzerland, a Chihuaha helped rescuers find their teacher who fell into a crack in a glacier, rescuers said this Sunday, July 6.
This “extraordinary” rescue operation took place on Friday in a glacier over Saas-Tare, said Air Zermatt, an air rescue company that operates in the Canton de Valais.
The man walked on the rates glacier with his puppy early in the afternoon, when he suddenly fell into a crack about eight meters deep. His faithful companion, a little Chihuahua, was more likely and stayed on the edge of the crack.
The precise location detected thanks to the dog
He stayed there until rescuers arrived, which “probably saved the life of his teacher.” The latter also had a “Talkie-Talkie fan” with whom he tried to ask for help. A nearby person captured the emergency call and alerted emergency services.
In the middle of the afternoon, an Air Zermatt team, with three rescue specialists, then went to the glacier. In the act, rescuers had difficulty identifying the fall point because “the scope of the glacier was vast and the hole difficult to detect.”
It was without the Chihuaha that later moved. His movement was seen by one of the rescuers. “Thanks to the dog’s behavior, the team was able to locate precisely the place of the accident,” said Air Zermatt. Rescuers were able to remember the victim and save him. He was then taken with his dog to the VIège hospital.
