European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski declared on Monday that the European Union’s agri-food system cannot be “held hostage” by states like the Russian Federation, on which it largely depends for fertilizers.
“Our long-term focus is on successfully greening our food systems, our agriculture and our fertilization practices. This is not only for environmental or climate reasons, but also to ensure our strategic autonomy and reduce our dependence”specified Wojciechowski.
“We cannot allow our agri-food systems to be held hostage by countries like the Russian Federation, which have shown that they are unreliable”he added.
The Commissioner made these statements at a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Brussels, where the scarcity and high prices of fertilizers were discussed in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
