The death toll after the earthquake that hit Cianjur on Monday, the most populous province in western Indonesia, rose to 268. The information was advanced by the Reuters agency, which quotes the local government. There are records of at least 150 missing people, more than a thousand injured and 58 thousand displaced. The search for survivors continues, but with great difficulty. The terrain is mountainous and landslides are constant.
Searches are also hampered by the architecture of the buildings in the city of Cianjur, as warranted by TSF the consul of the Portuguese embassy in Indonesia. “It is a place with infrastructural deficiencies, the existing obstacles, the fragility of the buildings. That makes the time factor even more pressing, ”he underlines.
Emanuel Joaquim also confirms that “an important part of the dead” are children, since the earthquake shook an area of schools. The consul reveals that among the victims there are no Portuguese, nor “not even foreigners”, since Cianjur “is not a tourist place”, nor with “big international businesses”.
The 5.6 earthquake on the Richter scale had its epicenter about 75 kilometers from Jakarta. Emanuel Joaquim assures that the scare “was felt” in the capital and in the embassy. “We evacuated the building, similar to what happened in a large number of offices. Fortunately, there was no damage to the note here, no victims, ”he assures.
The consul reinforces that “there is no Portuguese house or business affected” and that, for the moment, the atmosphere in the capital is calm “after some concern” when the first tremors were felt. But in the capital it is different: “Families were directly affected. People live a tragedy. There is still an expectation of people who have not yet been found. As it should be calculated, there is a great mobilization and also national commotion”.
