At least 14 people, including eight civilian army auxiliaries, were killed in two separate attacks by jihadist groups in northern Burkina Faso, security and local sources said on Tuesday.
“Armed individuals attacked the village of Safi, located in the commune of Boala, near Kaya (central-north), at dawn on Monday morning. The Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP, auxiliaries of the civil army) who were directly attacked They lost their lives. Eight elements,” said a security source.
Three “kidnapped” young people
A local VDP official, together with Kaya, confirmed the attack, evoking for his part a balance of “7 dead, 10 injured and significant material damage.”
“On the same day of Monday, near Markoye, in the Oudalan province (northeast), armed individuals killed six civilians and took vehicles and other property,” the security source added.
“The terrorists kidnapped three young people in the Salmossi-Markoye axis, who were later found dead in the bush during the day (Monday),” explained a relative of the victims.
“They robbed several people who fell on top of them in the axis, and they took vehicles,” added this source.
Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been regularly hit by increasingly frequent jihadist attacks that have killed thousands and forced an estimated two million people to flee their homes.
