Reporters without borders denounces “the claimed murder” of a jazeera journalist in Gaza by the Israeli army

The RSF press defense organization denounced “with force and anger the claimed murder” of Anas Al-Sharif, famous journalist of the Gaza Strip accused of being a terrorist for the Israeli army.

The reporters of the Press Defense Organization Sans Frontières (RSF) denounced on Monday, August 11 “with force and anger the murder claimed” by the Israeli army of a Jazeera channel in the Gaza Strip.

“Anas Al-Sharif, one of the most famous journalists in the Gaza Strip, was the voice of the suffering imposed by Israel to the Palestinians of Gaza,” the NGO said in a statement transmitted to AFP, asking for a “strong action of the international community to stop the Israeli army.”

Anas Al-Sharif was one of the few local journalists who have treated life in Gaza since the bloody attack on October 7, 2023.

A “terrorist” according to the Israeli army

Five journalists were killed this Sunday, August 10 by an Israeli strike in front of the Al-Shifa hospital. The Israeli army claimed to have attacked Anas Al-Sharif, a reporter known for his territory coverage without coastline, accusing him of being a “terrorist” who “pretended to be a journalist, who the latter has always refuted.

Israel describes Anas Al-Sharif as “the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for preparing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and Israeli troops.

RSF replied that these accusations had been formulated “without evidence”, reproaching the Israeli army for having “reproduced a known and already proven process, especially against journalists from Al-Jazeera.”

“On July 31, 2024, the Israeli army killed the reporters of Ismail Al-Ghoul and Rami Al-Rifi in a directed and claimed strike, accusing the first of being a terrorist,” said RSF.

The other victims of this Israeli murderer strike, which pointed more accurately to a tent in front of the Al-Sharif hospital in which journalists were parked, are the Mohammed Qreiqeh and the three Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa cameramen.

Four complaints already filed by RSF

According to journalists without Frontières, almost 200 Palestinian journalists have already lost their lives in strikes that affect the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the conflict more than 20 months ago.

Even so, according to the NGO, “the United Nations Security Council must urgently meet on the basis of resolution 2522 of 2015 on the protection of journalists in the period of armed conflict”, to avoid “such extrajudicial murders of media professionals.”

RSF remembers having filed “four complaints” against the Israeli army “to the International Criminal Court for War Crimes committed against journalists in Gaza.”
