Russia and Ukraine exchanged on Thursday, August 14, 84 War Prisoners, announced the Russian Ministry of Defense, on the eve of a highly anticipated summit among Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his American counterpart, Donald Trump.
According to the Ministry of Russia, “84 Russian soldiers returned from the territory controlled by the kyiv regime. In return, 84 prisoners of war of the Ukrainian armed forces were delivered.”
The exchanges of prisoners and bodies of murdered soldiers are one of the last areas where Moscow and kyiv continue to cooperate, more than three and a half years after the beginning of the Russian assault against Ukraine.
Thousands of prisoners exchanged this year
The two camps exchanged thousands of prisoners this year, according to the agreements found during three sessions of direct conversations in Istanbul from May to July.
These exchanges are the only concrete result of these meetings. During the last meeting in this format in July, the two delegations could only notice “the distance” of their positions to end the conflict.
Thursday’s exchange is produced on the eve of a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, who will mainly address the possibilities of peace in Ukraine, but a priori in the absence of the Ukrainian President, Volodyr Zelensky.
