Danish prime minister Put Frederiksen said on Saturday, August 16 that his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu was a “problem in itself” and said he wanted to use his role in the rotary presidency of the European Union to increase pressure on Israel.
“Netanyahu is now a problem in itself,” he said in an interview with the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, saying that his government was “too far.”
Denmark asks “sanctions”
The social and Democratic leader deplored a “humanitarian” absolutely terrible and catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the new colonization project in the West Bank.
“We are one of the countries that we want to increase pressure on Israel, but we have not yet obtained the support of EU members,” he said.
According to the Danish government heading, it is about exercising “political pressure, sanctions, either towards the settlers, the ministers or even Israel as a whole”, evoking commercial sanctions or in research matters.
“We do not exclude anything in advance. As with Russia, we build the sanctions to point where we believe they will have the greatest effect,” added Frederiksen, whose country does not plan to recognize the Palestinian state.
The attack perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023 led, on the Israeli side, the death of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count made of official data.
Israeli reprisals in Gaza have already left 61,430 dead, mainly civil, according to data from the Ministry of Hamas, considered reliable by the UN.
