Ukraine: three nuclear power plants “disconnected” from the power grid after Russian attacks

These disconnections have caused massive outages but do not pose a safety hazard to the plants at this time.

Three Ukrainian nuclear power plants were “disconnected” from the power grid on Wednesday after Russian strikes targeted power infrastructure and caused massive power outages, the national operator, Energoatom, announced.

“Due to a frequency drop in the Ukrainian power system, the emergency protection system was activated at the Rivne, Pivdennoukrainsk and Khmelnitsky nuclear power plants, which led to the automatic disconnection of all generating units,” Energoatom said on Telegram.

Stable radiation levels

According to the Ukrainian operator, “(the level) of radiation in the adjacent sites and territories has not changed” and “all indicators are normal.”

“As soon as the operation of the electrical system is normalized, the supply of electricity from the nuclear power plant will resume,” Energoatom said.

The operator also indicated that the supply to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, located in southern Ukraine and occupied by Russian forces, had been cut off from the Ukrainian grid.

“All (emergency) diesel generators are working. The radiation level at the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is still normal,” he said. The Zaporizhia power station has been deprived of power several times since the start of the Russian invasion in February following attacks of which Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other.

The one in Pivdennoukraïnsk, in the south, had also been affected by a strike that fell a few hundred meters from the plant in September.
