Zelensky calls for an urgent UN meeting to discuss the Russian attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday over Russian attacks that caused blackouts in neighboring Moldova, diplomatic sources told AFP.

Zelensky will attend the emergency debate — requested by Kiev and scheduled for 9 p.m. Lisbon time — via video conference, two diplomats told the French agency.

The Ukrainian leader said in a tweet that he instructed his country’s ambassador to the world body, Sergiy Kyslytsya, to request the meeting.

“Murder of civilians and destruction of civilian infrastructure are acts of terrorism. Ukraine continues to demand a firm response from the international community to these crimes.”said Zelensky.

In a letter to the Council President asking for the meeting, seen by AFP, Kyslytsya wrote that Russia “committed another act of terror against the civilian population of Ukraine” with Wednesday’s attacks.

The airstrike hit Ukraine’s already failing power grid, killing several and disconnecting three nuclear power plants from the grid.

The Ukrainian military said Russian forces fired about 70 cruise missiles at targets across the country on Wednesday.

Neighboring Moldova even said it was experiencing widespread blackouts caused by the new dam and its president, Maia Sandu, accused Russia of leaving her country “in limbo”.
