Iran is the focal point of the special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which meets this Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland. In the draft text of the draft resolution, the TSF had access, concern is expressed for human rights in the country, in the context of the protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini, on September 16, after being detained by Iranian customs police for misusing the Islamic headscarf.
The text also shows the apprehension of the 47 countries that are part of the UN Human Rights Council in the face of the repression exercised by the country’s authorities led by Ebrahim Raisi, which to date has caused almost 500 deaths, and the denunciations of arrests arbitrary acts of women and girls, who simply by demonstrating and exercising their rights, end up being victims of physical and sexual abuse.
The Council also calls on the government of Iran to end repression and discrimination against women and girls and allow them freedom of expression, opinion, religion or belief.
The document also comes with a request for victims and their families to have access to justice and reparation.
The mission will draft a report to deliver to the Human Rights Council at the body’s 53rd session in June next year.
In March 2024, during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, another report is expected.
