Inspections, research and a “need for response.” The mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas and the Portuguese Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, spoke this Thursday, September 4, the day after the derailment of a funicular that caused the death of at least 16 people in the capital of Lisbon. A Frenchman is one of the wounds.
“We have closed all Lisbon funicular and we are collecting all the information to find out what happened […]. Inspections have been carried out in all the city’s funicular since this morning, “said the mayor.
He adds: “The city needs answers. I am, on behalf of the Lisbon, the first to want to know what happened.” Carlos Moedas specifies that an exceptional meeting will take place on Monday, September 8.
“One of the worst human tragedies in our recent history”
The causes of the accident are not yet known, so several surveys are being carried out, including the Judicial Police.
“We will have more information about the causes of this (Thursday) late,” said Prime Minister who said he was “one of the worst human tragedies in our recent history.”
While a previous evaluation mentioned 17 dead, the Municipal Civil Protection service, explained that he had made an error in stating that two of the hospitalized victims died at night, when only one person had succumbed to his wounds. There are also five serious injured this Thursday.
