Three nuclear power plants are reconnected to the Ukrainian power grid

The three Ukrainian nuclear power plants under the control of kyiv were reconnected to the electricity grid on Thursday, after the connection was interrupted on Wednesday, following massive attacks by Russia, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy announced.

“After the massive attacks on Wednesday, workers in the energy sector managed (…) to reconnect three nuclear power plants to the electricity grid in the morning,” the ministry said today on the Telegram social network, adding that these facilities should begin to supply electricity “until tonight”.

The nuclear power plants in question are Khmelnytsky and Rivne (west) and Pivdennooukraïnsk (south), which were shut down by the automatic protection system after Russian attacks that affected several Ukrainian electrical infrastructures.

“If there are no new attacks, we will be able to greatly reduce the shortage [de eletricidade] in the energy system at the end of the day,” Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galouchchenko was quoted as saying in his ministry’s statement.

Throughout the country, “the situation in general is difficult”, but in some regions “the supply of electricity has already increased”, assured Galushchenko, who also stressed that “critical infrastructure throughout the country” can be reconnected to the electricity grid. .

kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced on Telegram that “about 70 percent of the capital remained without power this morning.”

The water supply, interrupted on Wednesday in most of the city after power cuts, has been restored in the neighborhoods located on the left bank of the Dnieper, the mayor said. Klitschko expects the rest of kyiv to receive water later today.

Russia fired more than 70 cruise missiles at Ukraine on Wednesday, deepening the energy crisis after weeks of shelling that hit power infrastructure particularly hard.

According to the Ministry of Energy, these attacks left without electricity the “vast majority of consumers” in the country, which had some 40 million inhabitants before the start of the Russian invasion launched on February 24.
