Against consumerism and in defense of the oceans. IOC-UNESCO launches “Blue Friday” this Friday

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) presents this Friday in Venice, Italy, the “Blue Friday” initiative, (“Blue Friday”) in response to the “Black Friday” commercial and in defense of the oceans

The so-called “Black Friday”, the last Friday of November, opens the Christmas shopping period with great discounts and is one of the greatest exponents of consumerism, having started in the United States, then spreading throughout the world.

This year, for the first time, IOC-UNESCO launches “Blue Friday”, today and Saturday, to “transform a purely consumerist event into a moment of reflection dedicated to safeguarding and restoring the Mediterranean Sea, through ocean literacy initiatives”. .

The event starts in Venice, but an IOC-UNESCO source told Lusa that “obviously the goal is to bring the moment to the whole world, sensitizing as many people as possible for the protection of the oceans”, and showing that it is possible to consume and produce more sustainably.

The initiative is intended to be an opportunity to propose concrete solutions to threats to all marine environments, not just the Mediterranean, the source also explained.

Round tables on the green and blue economy will be organized in Venice, with the participation of international companies, sustainable design and fashion will be discussed, and the effect that consumer choices can have on the environment, especially in the oceans.

“Blue Friday” is organized within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), created to promote the role of ocean science in fostering more sustainable development.

IOC-UNESCO was created in 1960 to study the protection of the marine environment, fisheries and ecosystems, as well as the changes caused by climate change.
