End of the career of the last escapee from the New Orleans prison. After several months on the run, Derrick Groves, the last inmate still at large among the ten men who managed to escape last May, was found this Wednesday, October 8 in Atlanta, according to AP.
A court-ordered SWAT team searched a home for several hours, Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Fair reports, resulting in him being found hiding in a hidden space under a home.
“Behind bars, where they belong”
“They didn’t find him right away. They had to use gas several times in the house and in the basement,” Brian Fair explained. “Given the time it took an experienced and well-trained emergency response team to get him out, he clearly planned to remain hidden for a while.”
Finally discovered by a police dog, Derrick Groves was discovered shirtless and barefoot. He was handcuffed at the scene and then taken to a police car.
On his X account, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry celebrated this arrest and thanked “federal, state and local authorities.” He stressed that each of the ten fugitives is now “in their place: behind bars.”
Convicted of murdering two people
During the intervention, authorities also discovered a gun and 6.8 kg of marijuana in the house, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill revealed during a press conference on Wednesday. Derrick Groves is now due to appear in a Georgia court this Thursday for an extradition hearing, it adds.
Among the ten fugitives, Derrick Groves was considered the most dangerous. Convicted of the murder of two people in 2018, he risked life in prison. He also pleaded guilty to violence against a prison officer. Authorities had offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
His escape, like that of his nine accomplices, occurred through a defective cell door during the night of May 16.
