After announcing a deal between Hamas and Israel, Donald Trump is reaping the benefits. This Thursday, October 9, Emmanuel Macron “congratulates” the American president who “has charted an ambitious path for a global agreement in the Middle East.” For the head of state, it is “a historic agreement” that was “concluded” in Egypt.
“The work and responsibilities do not stop at this first stage, although it is very important,” Emmanuel Macron warned this Thursday at the opening of a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dedicated to the Gaza Strip.
47 hostages still held in Gaza, including 25 dead
During the night of Wednesday to Thursday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, with the aim of establishing a “lasting” peace in the Palestinian enclave.
“This means that all the hostages will be released very soon and that Israel will withdraw its troops to an agreed line, the first step towards a solid, lasting and lasting peace,” detailed Donald Trump, for whom it is “a great day for the Arab-Muslim world.”
On October 7, 2023, Hamas kidnapped 251 people in Israel. 47 are still held by the Islamist movement, of whom 25 are dead, according to the Israeli army. According to the tenant of the White House, these hostages “will return on Monday.” “This will include the bodies of the dead,” the US president said.
“Hamas must fulfill its promises to release the hostages and respect the ceasefire,” Emmanuel Macron warned this Thursday afternoon. In exchange, the Jewish State will release 2,000 Palestinian detainees. For its part, Hamas announced that it had reached an agreement “that provides for the end of the war in Gaza.” The French president warned that the Islamist movement will be “completely excluded (…) from the government of Gaza.”
The tenant of the Elysée also addressed a few words to Israel. “The acceleration of settlement construction in the West Bank constitutes a threat to Palestine,” warns Emmanuel Macron, calling it “unacceptable and contrary to international law.”
The conflict was triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians, on Israeli soil. Since then, more than 67,160 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip in the Israeli retaliation campaign, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, under the authority of Hamas and whose figures the UN considers reliable.
