The ultra-conservative youth association Turning Point USA, founded by pro-Trump debater Charlie Kirk, announced the celebration of an event called “The All American Halftime Show” at the same time as Bad Bunny’s concert at the Super Bowl, on February 8.
This event is billed as a celebration of “faith, family, and freedom,” though no details regarding the event’s schedule or location have yet been shared.
This afternoon’s announcement comes after the controversies fueled in particular by far-right and anti-immigration movements, which target the Puerto Rican superstar, committed in particular against the repression exercised by ICE, an anti-immigration police force that has become a central element of Donald Trump’s immigration policy.
A committed superstar
The singer, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and who is one of the most listened to in the world, refused to perform in the United States due to the threat of an ICE raid during his concerts.
“People who live in the United States can come to see the concert in other countries, but if Puerto Ricans or South Americans who live in the United States come to see me in the United States, there could be these fucking ICE agents outside the concert hall,” he warned in an interview with ID.
“It’s something that worried us a lot,” he added to explain his decision not to perform on American soil.
A totally Spanish performance at the Super Bowl
For Bad Bunny, being chosen to perform at the popular Super Bowl halftime concert is “everyone’s victory, proof that no one can ignore the impact and contribution of Latin Americans in this country,” he declared, in Spanish, on the “Saturday Night Live” program, last October 4.
He adds, with a devastating smile, and this time in English: “If you haven’t understood what I just said, you have four months to learn.”
The singer affirmed his choice to speak in Spanish during his interviews, explaining that he would give a performance only in his native language during the Super Bowl.
A “100% English” program for Turning Point USA?
In the contact form offered by Turning Point USA for his concert, to the question about the desired musical genres, the first answer indicates: “all in English”, as a challenge to the Puerto Rican singer.
Jack Posobiec, Turning Point USA contributor and far-right debater, supports this idea. To the media Human Events, the American declared, as if echoing the singer’s words:
“Our concert will be 100% in English, and if you don’t speak this language, you have four months to learn it.”
