US President Donald Trump said this Sunday, October 12, that he could threaten his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, with supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to kyiv if Moscow does not end its invasion.
In recent months, Donald Trump has been considering the sale of long-range American Tomahawk missiles to the Europeans to deliver to Ukraine, after his meeting with Vladimir Putin in mid-August in Alaska (United States) failed to achieve progress towards the end of the war.
“Maybe I’ll talk to him about this. Maybe I’ll tell him, look, if this war doesn’t end, I’ll send you Tomahawks,” Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when asked if he would raise the issue with the Russian president himself.
“A new stage in aggression”
The U.S. leader said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested Tomahawks during their phone conversation Saturday about a new arms shipment to kyiv.
“The Tomahawks constitute a new stage of aggression,” added Donald Trump, who was visiting Israel and Egypt to promote a long-term peace agreement in Gaza.
“Do you want Tomahawks thrown in your direction? I don’t think so,” he added.
Vladimir Putin previously warned against supplying Tomahawks to kyiv, saying it would constitute “a new escalation” and affect relations between Washington and Moscow.
Donald Trump repeats that the war in Ukraine, which he promised to resolve within 24 hours of his inauguration in January, is the most difficult conflict he has ever tried to resolve.
