Donald Trump claimed this Wednesday, October 29, to have won “the war against the climate change hoax,” after comments by American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates denouncing the “catastrophic vision” of experts on global warming.
“I (HAVE!) just won the war against the climate change hoax. Bill Gates finally admitted that he was completely WRONG on the issue,” the US president declared on his Truth Social network, using capital letters as usual.
Praising the “courage” of Bill Gates, Donald Trump, known for his climate-skeptical positions and his defense of the fossil fuel sector, concluded his message with his famous slogan “MAGA”, or “Make America Great Again” (Make America Great Again, in French).
“Serious consequences” but not “disappearance of humanity” for Gates
In a lengthy text published on his website this Monday afternoon, Bill Gates wrote in particular that global warming “will not lead to the disappearance of humanity.”
A few days before the opening of the 30th United Nations climate conference, the Microsoft co-founder also asked that this COP30 in Brazil refocus the debate on “improving living conditions” and not on temperatures or greenhouse gas emissions.
If climate change will have “serious consequences,” added the philanthropist whose fortune amounts to more than $100 billion according to Forbes, “people will be able to live and prosper in most of the planet in the near future.”
Bill Gates, who left all executive roles at Microsoft in 2008 to dedicate himself to philanthropy, founded Breakthrough Energy in 2015. This fund has invested more than two billion dollars in emerging technologies, such as low-carbon cement or emission-free aviation.
Bill Gates’ vision irritates scientists, who accuse the billionaire of offering a false choice between climate action and reducing human suffering.
