The United States Senate voted Tuesday (61 in favor, 36 against) a law protecting same-sex marriage. The “Respect for Marriage Law” will ensure to every married couple the validity of their marriage in any state of the United States, as long as the marriage is valid in the state where it was formalized, explains the Washington Post.
The text must now go through the House of Representatives for a final vote, before being signed into law by Democratic President Joe Biden.
In the United States, same-sex unions have been guaranteed by the Supreme Court since 2015. But after the high court’s historic overturn on abortion, many progressives fear that this right, too, could crumble.
