Canadian police investigate Chinese meddling in elections

The Canadian government takes allegations of foreign interference “very seriously,” said Marco Mendicino, Minister of Public Safety.

Canadian police are investigating alleged foreign interference by China, including in its “democratic processes,” according to a letter written by the police chief, which, however, does not detail the allegations.

Written by Federal Police Chief Brenda Lucki, the letter is addressed to a parliamentary committee as the committee studies possible foreign interference, including from China, in the 2019 Canadian federal election.

On these elections won by Justin Trudeau, Brenda Lucki says that “there was no evidence at the time” of interference.

An “underground network”

“The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Federal Police) can confirm that it is currently conducting investigations into jamming activities carried out by foreign actors,” however, it is written in this letter.

Global News reported this month that China funded an “underground network” of Canadian federal election candidates and Chinese agents working for their campaign.

Reacting after the document was released, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that “Canada’s intelligence services have repeatedly emphasized that interference by foreign powers in Canadian affairs is permanent.”

“Canadians can rest assured that the integrity of our elections has not been compromised,” the police chief said.

China recently denied reports that President Xi Jinping and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau had discussed Chinese interference in Canada, following media coverage of a tense exchange between the two leaders at the G20 summit.
