Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos said in an interview today that she feels “politically persecuted” by Angola’s current president, João Lourenço, whom she continues to accuse of not respecting the separation of powers and conditioning justice.
“There is no doubt that we are facing a scenario of political persecution, and if we look at Angola and our legal system, it is easy to understand that the Attorney General of the Republic receives orders directly from the President, i.e. , unlike some countries,” said Isabel dos Santos in an interview with TVI/CNN.
Isabel dos Santos believes that there is no separation of powers in Angola and accuses the Republic’s Attorney General, Pitra Grós, of receiving orders from João Lourenço.
“The prosecutor, General Pitra Grós, receives orders directly from General Lourenço, from President João Lourenço,” he charged, adding that the Angolan leader “uses the law to wage war, uses state and public institutions, uses its own courts and uses the law to fight an opponent. An economic opponent and a political opponent,” he stressed.
That, he says, is the reason for what he considers the “political persecution” he says he is being targeted, namely to prevent “other voices from entering politics in Angola”.
As for Portugal, Isabel dos Santos says no government has asked her to invest in the country. “I have always worked with business contacts,” he said, reiterating that his relationship with Portugal has been “always through private investment”, with Portuguese businessmen.
Asked about her connection to Russia, Isabel dos Santos emphasized the culture and history of this country and when asked if she is considering moving to Russia, Isabel dos Santos replied only that she feels “a special affection” for that country.
“I have a special affection because it’s my mother’s country. That’s why it’s a place where I have family and I respect it very much, with a phenomenal culture,” he stated.
Regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, he replied that he hopes the conflict will be resolved. “Peace is important to everyone,” he concluded.
