Despite the protests, the Chinese authorities do not want to give in. Invited to the set of BFMTV this Wednesday, the Chinese ambassador to France, Lu Shaye, praised Beijing’s zero-covid policy. According to him, “it works” and is even “very effective”, although he has been questioned by historical demonstrations in several Chinese cities since Sunday.
The representative of the Chinese regime worked to discredit the movement by explaining that the population is waiting for “a relaxation” of the sanitary measures but that this was not possible because “immediately, there is an increase in cases of contagion.”
“If there is no man alive, there are no rights [de l’Homme]“, advanced the ambassador to justify the choice of China to prioritize the protection of its population against the virus before “freedom”, which would symbolize a relaxation of the measures.
The protest movement was “a bit surprising”
This move was “a bit of a surprise”, admitted Lue Shaye, touting recommendations to “reduce lockdowns, decrease lockdown durations and reduce PCR testing” but which “may not” have been implemented well locally.
Faced with videos of protesters demanding the resignation of President Xi Jinping, the ambassador stated that this event “is not political.” He also considers that the set of protest movements, unprecedented since the Tiananmen uprising in 1989, is the work of the “Western powers”.
Lu Shaye also reacted to accusations of censorship over the broadcast of the World Cup matches in Qatar. Several journalists have verified that official Chinese television no longer shows images of crowds of fans without masks. However, Lu Shaye assures that “the Chinese can watch the World Cup matches without a mask.”
