NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that the Western military organization “is not part” of the Ukrainian conflict and will not be “dragged into Putin’s war.”
“As winter approaches, Russia bombards Ukraine’s energy infrastructure trying to freeze Ukrainians into submission. Putin is using winter as a weapon and we cannot allow him to win, ”he reaffirmed today in Berlin at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. .
Stoltenberg also recalled the recent sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines and assured that this situation reminded “everyone” of the vulnerability of the infrastructure.
“In response, NATO has multiplied the number of ships patrolling the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and increased information sharing. But we must do more to protect this vital infrastructure,” he added.
The NATO chief also welcomed the agreement between Germany and Norway to protect underwater infrastructure through a NATO Infrastructure Center.
“This center will give allies greater situational awareness,” he said, adding that it could be a map to identify vulnerabilities.
