Spain: a migrant returns to the enclave of Melilla by paragliding

The migrant, who could not “be located at this time”, used an unprecedented technique to enter the enclave.

A migrant managed to return to the Spanish enclave of Melilla from neighboring Morocco on Thursday by paragliding, as we learned this Friday from the Spanish authorities.

“Around 6:15 p.m., two people who were traveling by car (in Melilla) saw a person in a paraglider” flying over the high ultra-security barrier that separates the enclave from Morocco and returned to Melilla, a spokesman for the prefecture of Melilla reported. city ’enclave’

These two people “notified the Civil Guard” but this “migrant could not be located” for the moment, he added.

According to this spokesman, it is “the first time” that a migrant enters Melilla by paragliding.

ultra protected enclaves

Located on the north coast of Morocco, the small enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta constitute the only two borders of the EU on the African continent.

The mesh barriers several meters high, equipped with cameras and surveillance towers, that mark the border between Morocco and these enclaves are the regular target of sometimes fatal attempts to break through.

On June 24, at least 23 migrants died trying to enter Melilla, the highest number of human casualties ever recorded during migrant intrusion attempts in one of the two Spanish enclaves.

This tragedy had provoked international outrage, with the UN denouncing an “excessive use of force” by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities.

Migrants also sometimes attempt to swim back to these enclaves from neighboring Moroccan towns.
