Kirstie Alley, Emmy winner for ‘Cheers,’ dies

Actress Kirstie Alley, who won an Emmy for her role on the TV series “Cheers” and starred in movies like “Look Who’s Talking,” has died at the age of 71.

Alley died of a recently discovered cancer, her children, True and Lillie Parker, said. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more incredible mother and grandmother,” she added, in a post on the social network Twitter.

Alley’s manager, Donovan Daughtry, confirmed the death in an email sent to the Associated Press (AP).

Alley became famous for playing the role of Rebecca Howe opposite Ted Danson in Cheers, the acclaimed television series about a Boston bar, from 1987 to 1993.

The character earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1991. Alley won a second Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Television Movie in 1993, for “David’s Mother.”

Alley was also known for playing, in the 1989 comedy “Look Who’s Talking,” the mother of a baby whose inner thoughts were voiced by Bruce Willis.
