At least three dead in attack in Thailand that derailed freight train

At least three people died today after the explosion of a bomb that hit the train tracks in southern Thailand, where clashes with the Islamic separatist movement have intensified in recent weeks.

The head of the Khlong Ngae police station, Chatchai Chanasith, told Efe that three people died in the latest attack.

The same source added that the perpetrators of the attack in Songkhla province have not yet been identified.

The latest explosion occurred near the place where last Saturday the deflagration of another bomb device derailed a freight train -with 20 wagons- coming from Malaysia and caused several injuries.

The three victims of the explosion were workers of the state railway company who were participating in the cleanup after the attack on Saturday.

The attack on Saturday and the attack on Tuesday were not claimed.

In recent weeks, the number of unclaimed attacks has increased, including the explosion of a car bomb that left one dead and 32 injured next to a complex of villas inhabited by members of the police in the province of Narathiwat, in the south of the archipelago. .

In recent decades, the region has been the scene of a separatist conflict, with Muslim groups demanding the independence of three provinces.

Muslim groups denounce discrimination against the country’s Buddhist majority and demand self-determination for Thailand’s three southern provinces, the former Patani Sultanate annexed in the early 20th century.
