Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2022. The magazine attributed the distinction, this Wednesday, to the Ukrainian president, as well as to the “spirit of Ukraine”, for the resistance that the country showed before the invasion of Russia.

“Whether the battle for Ukraine brings hope or fear, Volodymyr Zelensky has galvanized the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades,” wrote Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal, for whom the election “has never been more clear”.
“To show that courage can be as contagious as fear, to inspire people and nations to unite in defense of freedom, to remind the world of the fragility of democracy and peace, Volodymyr Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine are the 2022 Person of the Year Time,” wrote the American magazine.
“In the weeks after the Russian bombing began on February 24, his decision not to flee Kiev, but to stay and rally support, was crucial,” Time notes.
The magazine also supports the choice, stressing that “from his first 40-second post on Instagram on February 25 – showing that his office was intact and working – to the daily speeches delivered remotely in institutions such as parliaments, the World Bank and the Grammy Awards, the President of Ukraine has been everywhere.”
In 2021, the personality highlighted by Time was the businessman and billionaire Elon Muskthen owner of SpaceX and Tesla, now also owner of Twitter.
