A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan’s east coast Thursday as it was felt in the capital Taipei, the island’s meteorological institute announced.
The earthquake occurred at 12:03 p.m. (04:03 Lisbon time), about 30 kilometers off the coast of the Hualien region, with a depth of just 5.7 kilometers.
The quake was felt off the east coast of Taiwan.
In the minutes that followed, the institute registered eight aftershocks in the same area, anticipating to expect, in the next three days, new aftershocks of magnitude greater than 4 on the Richter open scale.
So far, the authorities are unaware of the existence of victims or material damage.
Taiwan lies at the confluence of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, and experiences frequent earthquakes.
