Two trains collide in Croatia

At least three people were killed and 11 others injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train Friday night in northeastern Croatia, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said.

“The impact was huge,” said the official at the crash site, adding that rescue teams may later find the bodies of more fatalities.

“Now it is night, there is no light, we do not know at this time if there will be more victims,” Plenkovic said.

Eight of the 11 injured are foreign nationals, and all were taken to hospitals in the cities of Slavonski, Brod, Pakrac and Nova Gradiska, the prime minister said, in remarks broadcast on Croatian HRT television.

Some of the victims suffered serious injuries, but according to information from hospitals, none of the 11 injured were in danger, Plenkovic added.

The train accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. in Lisbon) between the stations of Okucani and Novska, a city located near the border with Bosnia, the Croatian police said in a statement.

The passenger train was running on a local line, with 13 people on board, while the freight train was following only the driver, Plenkovic said.

Authorities said both convoys derailed after the collision. An investigation was opened to determine the causes of the accident.
