The Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UN), António Guterres, announced Monday that he will convene a Climate Ambition Summit for September 2023, which will only address “new, credible and serious climate actions” that help reverse climate change. accepted environmental crisis.
In a balance of the year 2022 made to the press at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres once again placed the climate crisis as one of the central points of his mandate, appealing to all leaders – Governments, companies, cities and regions , civil society and funders – for a stronger and more effective position in this regard.
“Climate change and biodiversity loss are other areas where it can be hard to find good news. We are still moving in the wrong direction. The global (greenhouse gas) emissions gap is growing. (… ) National climate plans are falling woefully short But we are not backing down. We are fighting,” said the UN leader.
Helping emerging economies move away from coal and accelerating the renewable energy revolution remains one of the UN’s priorities, as is “restoring confidence between north and south.”
