The head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, described this Wednesday as a “crime against humanity” the prohibition of the Afghan Taliban regime on women’s access to university.
In a message posted on his Twitter account, Borrell stresses that the EU “strongly condemns the Taliban’s decision to suspend higher education for women”, stressing that “persecution based on gender is a crime against humanity”.
The high representative for Foreign Policy of the 27 member states of the European bloc also added that this decision, “unique in the world”, deprives Afghanistan “of the contributions of women to society”.
The Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which assumed power in August 2021, prohibited this Tuesday, “until further notice”, the admission of women to public and private universities throughout the country, announced the local Ministry of Higher Education, quoted by the afghan news agency Jama Press.
In a brief statement, also broadcast by the official Tolo television channel, the Afghan ministry calls for the suspension of the admission of women to higher education institutions.
