“Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World: Dominion” conquer box office in 2022

The Tom Cruise-starring film “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World: Dominion,” and the Marvel production “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” were the top-grossing films worldwide in 2022.

The second part of the film that follows the story of naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, exceeded 1,488 million dollars (about 1,400 million euros) at the international box office, of which 48.3% of its collection was generated in the United States, according to data from the Box Mojo Office portal.

With “Top Gun: Maverik”, Cruise managed to surpass the box office success of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in 2018, which grossed more than 791 million dollars (about 745 million euros) worldwide.

The film takes up the story directed by Tony Scott in 1986 and portrays the aviator 36 years later, now as an instructor pilot who will have to face one last mission.

“Top Gun” was presented at the Cannes Film Festival and positioned itself as one of the favorite films that will compete for the awards, with two Golden Globe nominations and staying on the Oscar 2023 pre-nomination lists in the category of original music, sound and visual effects.

Although it became one of the highest-grossing films in history, ‘Top Gun’ did not exceed more than 1,906 million dollars (about 1,795 million euros) that the film ‘Spider-Man: No Return Home’ raised in 2021.

The list of the most profitable films worldwide in 2022 is second to the film “Jurassic World: Dominion”, with more than 1,001 million dollars (about 942 million euros) collected at the box office.

The production starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern and Sam Neill was the pinnacle of the “Jurassic World” universe, which began in 2015 and continued the legacy and high expectations left by Steven Spielberg’s film saga, “Jurassic Park”.

While the film garnered a 29% critical acceptance rate, according to the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page, data shows that fans around the world welcomed the project that evoked 1990s nostalgia with greater enthusiasm.

The third place is occupied by the Marvel cinematographic universe with the film ‘Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness’, one of the most anticipated of the year, with more than 955 million dollars (about 900 million euros) accumulated at the box office.

The list continues with titles like “Minimums 2: The Rise of Gru” (more than 939 million dollars or 877 million euros), “Black Panther: Wakanda forever” (more than 789 million dollars or 743 million euros), “The Batman” (more than 770 million dollars or 725 million euros) and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (more than 760 million dollars or 715 million euros).

Despite its late premiere on December 16, ‘Avatar: El camino del agua’ has already reached ninth place on the list so far, accumulating more than 609 million dollars (about 573 million euros), according to the latest data provided by Box Office. Mojo.

The second part of “Avatar”, by James Cameron, still on the billboard, has the challenge of surpassing or reaching the success of his first film, which is still the highest-grossing film in cinema history, having raised almost 3,000 million dollars (about 2,830 million euros).
