Heavy snowfall in Japan leaves at least 14 dead and more than fifty injured

At least 14 people were killed and more than 50 injured after heavy snowfall hit Japan in recent days, particularly in mountainous areas, in regions from Hokkaido in the north to the island of Kyushu.

Heavy snowstorms in Japan began on December 17, and since then some regions in the north and east of the country have seen snow accumulations three times their annual average.

Today, in cities such as Engaru in Hokkaido, Oguni in Yamagata Prefecture, and Gujo in Gifu Prefecture, snow layers ranging from 96 centimeters to 1.20 meters were recorded.

As a result, authorities have advised people to stay at home and avoid using their cars, although traffic has been closed in some areas due to poor road conditions, many of which are icy, the station reports. public NHK.

The meteorological services confirm that the snowfall has now reached its peak, so an intermittent snowfall is hardly expected in the next few days in the mountainous areas, where it still exists, not yet, or the danger of possible avalanches in areas with high accumulation of snow.
