Suspect in murder of Kurds in Paris to appear before judge on Monday

The 69-year-old man suspected of killing three Kurds in Paris on Friday left the psychiatric ward of police headquarters on Sunday and will appear before an investigating judge on Monday with a view to possible prosecution.

The information was advanced by the prosecutor’s office, which detailed that the suspect was arrested again this afternoon, after he was hospitalized in a psychiatric unit on Saturday, at the end of the day.

The detainee, who claims to have a “pathological hatred of foreigners”, is a French retiree who has admitted to opening fire on a Kurdish cultural center and a hairdresser’s in Paris, killing three Kurds and wounding three others.

The man, with a criminal record for racist attacks and released on the 11th of this month, had access to the weapons because he was part of a shooting sports club and did not belong to any far-right group, the minister said at the time of the French interior. .

The suspect faces possible charges of murder and attempted murder with a racist motive, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

So far, the investigation has been unable to establish any particular link to the Kurdish community, and neither the analysis of his phone nor the computer he had at his parents’ house has established any connection to far-right ideology.

The investigations rule out, for now, the terrorist nature of the action, as defended by representatives of the Kurdish community in France, who place Turkey behind the events, which occurred almost ten years after the cold-blooded murder of three highly regarded Kurdish militants. close to the scene where this shooting took place.

According to information released today by Parisian prosecutor Laure Beccuau, the shooter confessed to investigators that he had tried to carry out the massacre before in the neighboring city of Saint-Denis and that his intention was to commit suicide “after killing the foreigner.”

According to the statement from the prosecution, the suspect claimed that on Friday morning he went to Saint-Denis, a city north of Paris known for being inhabited by many immigrants, with the intention of killing as many as possible.

Although he was carrying his weapon and ammunition, when he did not find too many people, he gave up the plan and returned to the neighborhood where he lives, remembering that there was a Kurdish cultural center there, a community that he said he hated for having taken the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) prisoner and not having taken them. murdered.

There he committed the massacre, killing two men and a woman, the first two in front of the cultural center and the third in an adjoining Kurdish restaurant. Two died on the spot, the third at the hospital.

The man then went to a nearby hairdresser’s, where he injured three more people and where he was disarmed by one of them, until he was detained by the security forces.

During the interrogation, which had to be postponed on Saturday due to psychiatric problems, he described himself as “depressed” and “suicidal”.

He said that his hatred of foreigners began when, in 2016, he suffered a robbery at his home.

To the prosecutor, he told that “the only thing” he regrets is “not committing suicide”, something he intends to do “someday”, but “not before taking on as many enemies as possible”, referring to “all non-foreigners Europeans”.
