After Beijing announced earlier this week that foreign travel would resume from January 8, the Chinese rushed to apply for passports and travel reservations.
The opening of Chinese borders to international travel comes after three years of restrictions due to Covid-19. The BBC advances thatSince the reopening was announced, reservations have skyrocketed, but there are already countries that have decided to impose limitations on Chinese passengers.
This is the case of the United States, which is “concerned” about the increase in new Covid-19 infections and the “lack of transparency” on the part of the Chinese government.
Also Japan, one of the most popular destinations for Chinese, announced that all passengers from China must present a negative test upon arrival. If they test positive, they must quarantine for seven days.
In India, Chinese travelers must also present a negative test upon arrival.
The resumption of international travel in China comes as the country battles a new wave of infections.
China announced this Monday the end of mandatory quarantines upon arrival in its territory as of January 8, the last vestige of its drastic measures against the Covid-19 pandemic that have been in force since 2020.
However, the gradual end of the “Covid zero” strategy in China since the beginning of December has been accompanied by a worrying increase in infections in the country.
The Chinese authorities have even stopped publishing daily data on the health situation since Sunday. The official figures were increasingly criticized, since the underestimation of the cases of infections and deaths became flagrant.
