Zaporizhia: Putin warns Macron of ‘catastrophic consequences’ of attacks

According to the Tass agency, the French and Russian leaders again mentioned the Zaporizhia power plant, the scene of intense fighting for several weeks.

They spoke again. Three weeks after resuming their exchanges, Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron called each other this Sunday, according to the Russian news agency Tass, citing the Kremlin.

The two leaders discussed in particular the situation at the site of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which has been bombed for several weeks. By mid-August they had already agreed on the need for an IAEA on-site inspection to review the status of the plant.

“Depoliticized interaction” on the spot

This Sunday, when the last Zaporizhia reactor was turned off, Vladimir Putin warned his French counterpart of “the catastrophic consequences” of Kyiv’s attacks on the perimeter of the plant.

During their phone conversation, the Kremlin chief drew attention to “regular Ukrainian attacks on the sites of the Zaporizhia power plant, including the repository of radioactive waste, which could have catastrophic consequences,” according to a statement.

The Russian and French presidents have agreed this time on the need for “depoliticized interaction” on the ground, with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In addition, Vladimir Putin took advantage of this exchange to tell Emmanuel Macron that the European Union “should not hinder” Russian exports of grain and fertilizers to Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
