“You have cancer”: the terrifying wishes of an English doctor’s office

22 minutes That was how long the scare lasted for patients at a medical center in Askern in the UK. On December 23, as revealed by the tabloid Sun this thursday, sure enough, the pharmacy sent them a text message to wish them happy holidays…using the wrong subject, mistakenly announcing “aggressive lung cancer”. The firm corrected the situation shortly after with a second message.

‘Diagnosis: aggressive lung cancer with metastases’: A practice in the north of England scared hundreds of patients by sending this message instead of Christmas greetings, the newspaper reported on Thursday. Sun. On December 23 at 3:49 p.m., patients at this Askern health center, near the city of Doncaster, received a text message on their phones informing them of this diagnosis, asking them to fill in the corresponding forms and concluding: “Thank you ” .

At 4:11 pm another message followed offering a “most sincere apology”: “This was sent to you in error. Our message should have said: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.” Contacted by AFP, the medical office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The error was not liked by patients, with some posting a screenshot of the messages on the firm’s Facebook group along with a very angry message. “Another big mistake by lousy doctors,” Carl Chegwin posted, while another user responded in a comment: “Everyone in Askern got this message!”

overflowing centers

According to SunAmong the recipients of the message was a 57-year-old father who was waiting for the results of tests to determine if he had lung cancer. Chris Reed told the tabloid that he tried to call the company, but he was unsuccessful because the line was busy. He went there and then they told him that the tests were negative.

The incident comes as relations are often tense between Britons and their “GPs”, these centers in the public health system where they are supposed to be monitored and treated for free, but who are overwhelmed after years of austerity.
