Funeral for Benedict XVI on January 5, wake begins Monday at St. Peter’s Basilica

The funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died this Saturday, will take place next Thursday, January 5, and will be presided over by Pope Francis, the Vatican reported this morning, quoted by AFP.

Until then, the wake for Benedict XVI will take place starting Monday, January 2, in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Holy See confirmed in a statement.

“The body of the emeritus pope will be in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for the farewell to the faithful,” read a statement from the Holy See press office quoted by the EFE news agency.

Benedict XVI died this Saturday morning at 9:34 local time (8:34 GMT), at the age of 95, in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican, where he had resided since his resignation in 2013.

Joseph Ratzinger was born in 1927 and was Pope between 2005 and 2013, when he abdicated and became emeritus of the diocese of Rome.
