The Chinese government on Tuesday condemned the imposition of Covid-19 tests by a dozen countries on people arriving from China and warned that the country could take retaliatory measures.
“Some countries have put in place entry restrictions targeting Chinese travelers only. This has no scientific basis and some practices are unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, adding that China could take “reciprocal measures.” .
China has kept its borders closed to foreigners since 2020. The country has not granted visas to tourists for almost three years and imposes a mandatory quarantine upon arrival in its territory.
These isolation measures will be lifted on January 8, but a screening test will still be required less than 48 hours before arrival in Chinese territory.
The measure coincides with the expected and gradual resumption of foreign travel by the Chinese after three years in which they were prohibited.
As a precautionary measure, a dozen countries, such as Italy and the United States, decided to impose PCR tests on travelers from China, which is being hit by a wave of Covid-19 cases.
Morocco, for example, has simply banned all travelers from China, “regardless of their nationality,” from entering its territory.
